As Deputy Coordinator of the ‘Communication in Science’ section, I coordinate and teach academic writing and presentation skills at the Medical Faculty of Leiden University, the Netherlands, to students, PhD candidates and professionals. Our five-year program is fully integrated with the content-based subjects, because we believe this is the most effective and efficient way of teaching such skills. One of our highlights is the student symposium (see: http://www.bmsleiden.com), which we see as a fusion of our teaching activities. In addition, I’m a teacher at the Centre for Academic English at our university.

I have enjoyed teaching and working here since 2000 and I am increasingly focusing on research. Currently, the ‘Communication in Science’ team is working on a publication, to appear in 2008, describing the blueprint of our teaching concept, which is rooted in sociolinguistics and discourse analysis. We hope our approach will appeal to colleagues across the globe.

I have been a Board Member since 2005 and I would very much welcome the opportunity to continue my work for EATAW. I hope to play an active role in the development of an online journal for EATAW, the expansion of special interest groups, and the improvement of the EATAW website. Naturally, I’m very keen on helping to organize the 2009 conference of this international and inspiring community.
