I am the Director of the Center for English Academic Writing recently opened at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. Our Center is one of the first writing centers in Ukraine. I have been organizing and participating in the Center’s activities which include trainings for Ukrainian researchers from all over Ukraine and workshops on different aspects of academic writing. I am also a co-author and a tutor of the distance course on essay writing, the first course on academic writing offered in Ukraine in a distance mode. I attended two EATAW conferences held in Budapest (2003) and Athens (2005). These conferences were a powerful impulse for setting up our center and seeing the directions for its development. They were also an excellent opportunity to network with those interested in the field of academic writing. I see EATAW as a tool for creating the community of professionals willing to share their knowledge and learn from each other. I also believe that involving more professionals from post-Soviet countries where teaching writing was traditionally neglected during the Soviet times is an important task in building the common European educational and research zone.
